Sunlight-Responsive Thermochromic (SRT) Glazing
Within the REHAU Montana ecosmart House project, the windows will have glass fabricated with Sunlight-Responsive Thermochromic (SRT) glazing, which passively tints the glass in response to direct sunlight, helping to keep rooms comfortable and allowing occupants to enjoy views without glare or heat from the sun’s rays. The windows will continuously adapt any time of the day, year round, in any place in the house, based on the amount of direct sunlight.
The glazing is a system designed and invented by Pleotint. (www.pleotint.com) . The Pleotint “SRT” glazing system effectively addresses solar heat gain and does so in a simpler manner than alternate technologies. Pleotint’s Technology is a self-tinting film that tint in the presence of direct sunlight to block heat, glare and ultraviolet light. The variable light transmission tinting requires only that it be heated by direct sunlight. There are no wires, electrodes, power supplies or control apparatus required (i.e., the system is completely sunlight activated).
The glass is triple pane construction within a 1-3/8” rebate and provides additional insulation which is energy saving and effective in the Bozeman and Rocky Mountain Region. The research will show how effective and the goal is to show the SRT window system to be 20% or higher in energy savings over conventional glass.
